There’s ‘Tension’ in Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet’s Golden Globes Kiss, According to a Body Language Expert: Here’s Why

Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet have been romantically linked since April 2023, but the two tend to be quite private. (They have never commented on the relationship themselves.)

But on January 5, the two had a date night 2025 Golden Globeswhere they were seen kissing during the ceremony. Naturally, people freaked out on social media.

Here’s what to think about their Golden Globes outing — and what it says about their relationship status, according to body language expert Patti Wood.

At the Golden Globes, there was ‘tension’ between them.

While Kylie, 27, and Timothée, 29, were caught kissing, Wood says it was likely posed. There’s a certain strain in Kylie’s facial expression that suggests she’s aware of the cameras, says Wood.

“Kylie holds her arm very close to her chest, with her arm bent out,” Wood explains. “Her shoulder, elbow, hand and arm are sharp, rather than soft. When we feel happiness and joy, our whole body language is more rounded.”

There’s “some tension” between these two, Wood adds, noting that Kylie seems to want to keep Timothée away from her a bit.

On his side, Timothée’s arm, shoulder and hand are also facing backwards, which can feel unnatural when you’re kissing someone, says Wood.

“It would be more natural if his left hand went up and around her,” she adds. “His arms and shoulders are drawn back. There is a mismatch in his body language.”

At times they have ‘friend’ energy.

In this photo, Timothée and Kylie share a sweet moment holding hands. But Wood points out that you wouldn’t necessarily know they’re in a relationship by the way they walk.

“It just looks like, ‘Hey, I’m taking my friend to another table,'” she says. “They’re not aligned. He’s not looking back, she’s not leaning forward. The typical indicators of being a couple aren’t there.”

Wood says that sometimes when a man clears the way for a partner, there is a “guarding body language” that can be seen – but not in this photo.

They are proud to be seen together.

In this photo, it is clear that Timothée is happy to be standing next to Kylie. “It’s a sly happiness of ‘Look who I’m with,'” says Wood. But Kylie poses with her arm down, her leg out and her nails on full display. “She’s protecting her body from him,” says Wood.

There is another mismatch with Timothée’s body language, points out Wood. The top of his body is angled toward Kylie, but his legs are pointing away — meaning he’s not fully leaning into this, she says.

Overall, Wood says these two are happy to be seen in public together, but they don’t seem super tight at the moment. “They’re on a date,” she says. “I don’t see a committed affection. Instead, it’s ‘We’re straight and we want to get together.’
