FWPD investigating after officer injured, suspect killed at Harris Road hotel

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) says a suspect was shot and killed and an officer was injured during an investigation Wednesday afternoon at an apartment on Harris Road.

FWPD Public Information Officer John Chambers says officers were called to Parkview Studios on Harris Road, near the West Wind Apartments, around 12:30 a.m. to assist Indiana State Parole officers with a barricaded subject.

Chambers says a woman who had a felony parole warrant was armed with a knife inside the apartment. When officers tried to make contact with her, they say she barricaded herself inside.

FWPD says officers with the department’s Emergency Services Team, Crisis Response Team and Air Support Unit were called to the scene to assist.

After several unsuccessful attempts to contact the woman and de-escalate the situation, Chambers says the officers fired shots. FWPD says the woman was shot and taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

An officer also suffered minor injuries during the altercation, although it is unclear how they were injured.

As is standard department protocol, the officers involved in the incident will be placed on administrative leave.

A public safety alert was sent around 2:34 p.m., asking residents to avoid the area of ​​Harris Road from Goshen Road to Coliseum Blvd.

The police state that further information will be released at a later date.
