USPS won’t be delivering mail on Thursday, here’s why

(Grey News) – The United States Postal Service will not deliver mail on Thursday to honor the late former President Jimmy Carter.

President Joe Biden declared January 9 a national day of mourning. It is the same day that the official state funeral for Carter will be held at the Washington National Cathedral.

As a result of the designation, the Post Office will not deliver mail. Its offices and facilities will be closed, but there will be “limited package delivery service that day to ensure the organization does not experience any negative impact on its package delivery operations.”

Normal activities and service will resume on Friday.

All postal services are also required to fly the American flag at half-mast through sunset on January 29 to honor Carter.

The US Supreme Court, the stock market and government offices will also be closed on Thursday.

Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy at Carter’s funeral. President-elect Donald Trump said he will attend the service.

The last time a national day of mourning was held was in December 2018 following the death of former President George HW Bush.
