At the time of his death, there were four living presidents, including Donald Trump, who will transition from past president to current president upon his inauguration later this month.

Until Jimmy Carter’s death last month, we had six living presidents, a tally that has only happened a handful of times over the years.

Now the living presidents are:

Over the past 30 years, five presidents have been laid to rest.

When did Nixon die?

Richard Nixon, the 37th president, died on April 22, 1994 at the age of 81. His death came more than 20 years after he resigned from the presidency in 1974.

Nixon was laid to rest in a private service on April 27, 1994.

When did Gerald Ford die?

Gerald Ford, the 38th president, died on December 26, 2006 at the age of 93.

Ford is the only president to have served without being elected to office. His state funeral was on 2 January 2007.

When did Reagan die?

Ronald Reagan, the 40th president, died on June 5, 2004 at the age of 93. Reagan served two terms from 1981 to 1989 and was remembered for his role in ending the Cold War. He was laid to rest in a state funeral on 11 June 2004.

When did George HW Bush die?

George HW Bush, the 41st president, died on November 30, 2018 at the age of 94. His presidency from 1989 to 1993 included the Gulf War and the end of the Soviet Union. He was, until Joe Biden, the last one-term president, and until Trump lost the election in 2020, the last to lose re-election.

A state funeral was held for Bush on 5 December 2018.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president, died on December 29, 2024 at the age of 100. Carter was the oldest living president, serving from 1977 to 1981, focusing on human rights and diplomacy.

His state funeral took place on Thursday 9 January 2025.
