Dry and cold Thursday then snow and a wintry mix through Friday

Sunny to partly sunny Thursday with afternoon highs only in the mid/upper 30s.

WEATHER FORECAST FRIDAY AND SATURDAY

The potential continues for a possible winter storm beginning Friday morning after sunrise and continuing throughout the day and Friday night before tapering off early Saturday. Forecast model data continues to indicate the potential for accumulation of snowfall area wide beginning Friday morning and early afternoon. So the uncertainty that the warming in the air can affect or reduce the local snow totals. Amounts locally could be in the 2″-4″ range with higher end amounts possible north and west of the city where less of this mix could occur. In town around 2″-3″ potential and possibly even lower south of town. Please be aware that even where snow may change to a mix with rain or sleet, with cold surfaces and temperatures hovering around freezing, this can still cause hazardous travel conditions, although snow totals may be lower. The higher potential for a mix could be from Chattanooga and south. “If” less warming occurs in the air and precipitation remains mainly snow for a longer period.

So there is a lot to track as this system evolves. This poses a challenge for driving conditions throughout the area through Saturday.

Any wintry precipitation should move out and taper off early Saturday with highs in the mid/upper 30s. 10s and low 20s Sunday morning means some refreezing of any melted surfaces and highs Sunday just barely above freezing in the mid/upper 30s for a few hours.
