WIS alum Craig Melvin will start as co-anchor of the ‘Today’ show on Monday

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – WIS and Columbia native Craig Melvin will begin anchoring the ‘Today’ show on Monday.

For the first time in history, the University of South Carolina Band was chosen to perform.

The show announced in November, Melvin would replace Hoda Kotb to co-anchor alongside Savannah Guthrie.

Melvin has been a part of NBC for almost 14 years. During his time at the network, Melvin has covered presidential elections, the Olympics, breaking news and more.

WIS alum Craig Melvin will start as co-anchor of the ‘Today’ show on Monday

Before serving sports at the network, Melvin was an anchor at WIS, where he started as the ‘Our Generation Reporter’ in the 1990s in high school.

Melvin appeared on the Sunday Night Football Halftime show, which aired on WIS Sunday night.

WIS’s Judi Gatson will be in New York Monday with behind-the-scenes coverage of Melvin’s first day in his new role.

A big surprise:

Family and friends gathered at Melvin’s alma mater, Columbia High School, Monday morning to celebrate Melvin and watch his first show as co-anchor.

WIS’ Jordyn Markhoff was live all morning giving updates on the vigil party preparations. She spoke with Dr. Carlos Smith, his middle school principal, as well as Jeanette Dozier, his 8th grade math teacher, whom Melvin has called his favorite teacher.

WIS’ Rick Henry was also on hand at Columbia High School to offer his regards to Melvin.
