It will now cost you to use the restroom at Starbucks according to the new rule

Plan to hang out or use the restroom at Starbucks? It will now cost you, according to a new company policy.

Starbucks changed a policy it had in place where customers could use the toilet and hang out in the cafe without having to make a purchase.

The rule change comes as part of an effort led by Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol to improve the customer experience and relationships between customers and employees.

It should also discourage homeless and non-paying customers from loitering in the cafe. Signage on all doors at its North American locations will enforce the policy.

But Starbucks didn’t always restrict non-paying customers from using their restrooms or hanging out in their cafes without making a purchase.

In 2018, the cafe introduced an “open door policy” after taking a lot of heat for arresting two black men at a location in Philadelphia who were waiting for a friend.

One of them had asked to use the restroom, when one of the Starbucks employees replied that it was only for paying customers. Then the men had occupied a table without paying for anything, which was common practice at the time.

Things escalated when a manager called the police on the men after they told the manager they were just waiting for their friend so they could have a business meeting.
