Home of Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin broke in

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was the target of a burglary over the weekend.

Few details of the crime have been released. Late Tuesday night, the team released a statement about the ordeal.

“Penguins Evgeni Malkin’s home was burglarized last weekend. Details of the situation will not be released as this is an ongoing investigation. We are working closely with local authorities and team security. Malkin has requested that his privacy be respected during this time and We will have no further comment on the matter.”

Malkin has a residence in Sewickley Heights.

The incident comes as the FBI has warned sports leagues about criminal organizations targeting professional athletes following a series of break-ins at the homes of prominent NFL and NBA players.

Athletes’ homes are being targeted because of the perception that they may contain high-end items such as jewelry, watches and cash, the FBI said in a whistleblower report obtained by ABC News.

NFL star quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City and Joe Burrow of Cincinnati, along with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, have been victims, as have NBA players Luka Doncic of Dallas, Bobby Portis of Milwaukee and Mike Conley Jr. from Minnesota have been victims.

Organized theft groups from South America use publicly available information and social media to identify athletes’ habits and track their comings and goings, the FBI report said. The groups use technology that allows them to bypass alarm systems, block wireless internet connections and disable devices, cover security cameras and hide their identities.
