NHL insider suggests Connor McDavid could leave Oilers free

NHL insider Greg Wyshynski recently discussed how he’s not sure Connor McDavid will sign with the Edmonton Oilers next summer.

The Edmonton Oilers secured half of their superstar duo last year when they signed Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year contract extension which starts next season.

The deal was celebrated by Oilers fans at the time, and rightfully so.

After all, Draisaitl is one of the best players in the entire league, and his chemistry with Connor McDavid is off the charts.

Furthermore, most Oilers fans seemed to agree that Draisaitl signing the extension meant McDavid would almost certainly follow suit.

NHL insider Greg Wyshynski revealed today that he was one of those who believed that would be the case, but now it seems he has changed his mind.

‘I think the next couple of playoff seasons for the Oilers, while Connor McDavid remains under contract, is very, very important. And I no longer necessarily believe that Leon’s signature is a foreshadowing of Connor’s signature. I don’t think it’s as guaranteed, cut and dry, paint the mural, that Connor is going to stay in Edmonton. You look at a team like Boston or New York (Rangers), how those lineups are built, what their contracts look like in a few seasons, and you can say to yourself that there could be some pretty interesting franchises that will be ready to make. a race against the best player in the world.’
