Today is the 83rd birthday of Muhammad Ali. Ali, who died in June 2016, left behind an estimated fortune of $50-80 million. His business interests included Muhammad Ali Enterprises, which was formerly known as GOAT LLC (standing for “Greatest of All Time”). Although substantial, Ali’s wealth was modest compared to some other celebrities—for example, the Internal Revenue Service valued Michael Jackson’s name and image rights at approximately $434 million.

In terms of his boxing earnings, while Ali achieved many firsts in his career, he was not the first boxer to earn a million-dollar purse. That distinction belongs to Gene Tunney, who achieved the milestone in his 1927 rematch with Jack Dempsey. Ali’s own notable paychecks included $2.5 million (equivalent to $15 million in today’s dollars) for his 1971 fight against Joe Frazier and $5.45 million (worth about $26 million today) for the 1974 George Foreman fight.

His highest nominal payday came in 1980 when he earned $7.9 million to face Larry Holmes. But when accounting for inflation, that amount equates to about $22 million in today’s terms, making his 1974 Foreman fight purse of $5.45 million (worth $26 million today) actually his most valuable payday in real terms.
