Winter storm: Snow expected in NYC as polar vortex promises deep freeze

According to the National Weather Service, there is a 30% chance of snow showers after 16.00 Thursday. The sky will be mostly cloudy with a temperature near 33.

Snow should enter New York City around 19.00 and be out of the area between 23.00 and midnight.

“We’ll probably get into the evening commute without snow, but then it hits for a short period,” FOX 5 NEW Mike Woods said. “We’re talking about two, maybe three hours of light to moderate snow for a short period of time, then it’ll come out of here.”

What’s next:

A polar vortex will send temperatures below freezing in New York City next week. The FOX Forecast Center said a lobe of the polar vortex will dip southward and move into the Tri-State area.

According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday in New York City will see a high near 20. On Wednesday, the high will be near 22. FOX Forecast Center said temperatures will drop as much as 45 degrees below average in spots.

The monthly temperatures are already 5-10 degrees below average, and the FOX Forecast Center said this will all but ensure that many places in the eastern United States will see their coldest January in years.
