Letters: Johnnie Walker obituary | Pop and rock

In the summer of 1975, Johnnie Walker introduced me to the music of Bruce Springsteen by repeatedly playing the title track Born to run album on his Radio 1 show.

This persuaded me to buy the album and I wrote to tell Johnnie how much I enjoyed it and mentioned that my favorite track was Thunder Road.

To my surprise, Johnnie read my letter on air, and although it wasn’t a request show, he played Thunder Road in its entirety, probably for the first time on national radio. He cared about the music and listened to his listeners.

Johnnie Walker, a wonderful and fearless broadcaster, and his wife, Tiggy, used their experience of caring for each other through various illnesses to become strong advocates on behalf of unpaid carers.
