Schools may close due to freezing weather

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — School administrators are keeping an eye on the incoming arctic blast expected to hit the area early next week.

The cold air is expected to enter the region Sunday evening, and the area could see some wintry precipitation, including snow, sleet or freezing rain, sometime between Tuesday morning and Wednesday evening.

In preparation for this freezing and possibly snowy weather, Dothan City Schools announced that administration is monitoring the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service and staying in touch with the Dothan-Houston County EMA.

“A weather event may occur next week that may affect travel and DCS transportation services. As always, the safety and well-being of students and staff is always the highest priority,” DCS officials said on Facebook Friday afternoon.

The school system is expected to announce whether they will change school schedules on Sunday.

A warming shelter will open Sunday at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center to prepare for the coming weather.
