UK vs Alabama game stats, highlights

LEXINGTON — Fresh off what was arguably the greatest season in school history, wrapped up Alabama‘s first Final Four appearance, Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope heaped praise on his colleague. Crimson Tide coaches Nate OatsPope said, “has been incredible” in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and has the program “in a great position,” both this season and the upcoming ones.

The Wildcats and Crimson Tide, both ranked in the top 10 in the two major polls (the USA TODAY coaches and that Associated Press) place today at Rupp Arena. They double as the top two scoring teams in the SEC: Alabama is tied for first nationally (tied with Iowa) at 89.5 points per game. match, with Great Britain second in line with 88.7.

The Wildcats and Crimson Tide like to push the tempo, space the floor and drain 3s.

“They’ve always been so potent and required you to guard the room,” Pope said. “Their pace is elite. … When you break down their possession consumption in the first six seconds and the other six seconds of the shot clock, by marks, that’s actually when they’re most (dangerous).”

Their similar philosophies offensively are a gift and a curse, Pope believes.

“They’re really, really efficient at the rim and their volume from the 3-point line is intense, right?” Pope said, referring to Alabama’s 31.2 3-point attempts per game, tops in the conference. “They haven’t shot it well, but their volume is always scary. Like the night they make shots, it’s sure to be a long night for their opponent.”

Here’s a look at the final box score:

The Cats trail 47-45 at halftime after the Crimson Tide closed the final four minutes on a 10-5 run.

Bama forward Grant Nelson leads all scorers with 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field. UK was led by guard Otega Oweh and forward Amari Williams, who each scored eight points.

The most notable statistic, given the frantic pace of the game, is that both teams took care of the ball. Both Alabama and Kentucky had just four turnovers each.

With 7:59 left in the first half, Kentucky leads Alabama, 30-28.

UK is 11 for 23 (47.8%) from the field; Alabama is 10 of 21 (47.6%). Kentucky is 5 for 7 (71.4%) from beyond the 3-point line. Alabama, on the other hand, is 4 of 13 (30.8%) from distance.

However, both teams are struggling at the moment. The Wildcats have missed six of their last seven shots from the field, while the Crimson Tide have missed six straight and 8 of 9. The visitors haven’t scored a point in more than two minutes.
