Late in the third quarter of last night’s playoff game against the Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes jumped and then slid at the very last second before being tackled by two defenders.

Because the slide came so late in the game, the defenders apparently didn’t have time to retreat and made contact with Mahomes. Consequently, the officials threw penalty flags for hitting a sliding quarterback.

Fans and experts were both outraged by the punishmentand even Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain chimed in. In a since-deleted tweet, PS2 wrote: “Come on man what we gonna do when he slipped.”

Of course, Surtain was not alone in his belief that it should not have been a punishment. Even ESPN’s Troy Aikman protested during the broadcast.

“Oh come on!” Aikman said. “I mean, he’s a runner. I couldn’t disagree with that one more. He barely gets hit.”

Mahomes and the Chiefs will now face the winners of the Buffalo Bills-Baltimore Ravens game in the AFC Championship game next week.
