Arctic blast and lake effect snow to affect West Michigan

News Channel 3’s meteorologists have issued a weather alert day for Monday and Tuesday.

The coldest air we’ve seen so far this season is on the way, as well as several inches of lake-effect snow.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for much of West Michigan through Tuesday evening.

The heaviest snow will fall closer to the lakeshore with lower amounts the further east you go.

This will be very light and fluffy snow due to cold temperatures.

This means that the snow easily blows around and can create whiteouts.

Hazardous travel conditions are expected through Tuesday evening due to snow-covered roads and reduced visibility.

The lake effect snow comes along with dangerously cold conditions.

A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for all of West Michigan.

Temperatures will be in the single digits or below zero from Sunday evening to Wednesday morning.

When you factor in the strong wind, it will feel like -10 to -25 degrees at times.

Wind chills this low can lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

It is important to limit your time and your pet’s time outside in the coming days.

If you are traveling, be sure to pack an emergency kit with items such as hats, gloves, blankets, non-perishable food and water, and a first aid kit.

Stay warm and be safe, West Michigan!
