Colin Jost says Scarlett Johansson was ‘shocked’ by ‘SNL’ vagina joke

Colin Jost explains how his wife Scarlett Johansson really felt when he joked with her on a recent episode of Saturday Night Live.

It happened when Jost and co-host Michael Che anchored the “Weekend Update” segment in the final episode of the year, where the two tell jokes the other wrote for them that they haven’t seen. As viewers saw on the December 21 episode, this time it referenced Marvel actress Johansson, whom Jost married in 2020.

“Scarlett was really so shocked,” Jost told the host The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “Because obviously I was surprised by everything, but they gave her a heads up. They said, ‘Hey, would you be okay if Michael made a little, like, kind of vagina joke at some point?’ And she said, ‘Yeah, you know, whatever I’m open to.’

Jost couldn’t help but laugh as he read the words on air last month. He said he didn’t mind roast beef sandwiches being removed from Costco’s menu because he had been “eating roast beef every night since my wife had the baby.”

At the moment, Jost laughed so hard that he put his head in his hands. Johansson, who was watching the scenery but was shown to the audience, opened her mouth.

“Then when it was the opposite,” Jost said, “I didn’t know where it was going. And then the graphics came up.”

He continued, “So Scarlett is backstage like, ‘Oh, my God! It is what it is.’

Jost and Johansson married in 2020 and welcomed a son, Cosmo, in August 2021. (She is also mother to 10-year-old daughter Rose, whom she shares with ex-husband Romain Dauriac.)

The couple met on one of the occasions where the star in films, among others Yoyo Rabbit, Lost in Translationand Ghost world appeared on SNL. She’s hosted an impressive six times, so she can definitely take a joke.

Jost, a “Weekend Update” anchor since 2014, agreed with Fallon that his delivery of the funny lines was “a legitimate, live moment” and that he wasn’t performing.

“I can’t behave myself,” he stalled.

The January 25 episode of SNL will be hosted by Timothée Chalamet, who plays Bob Dylan in the new biopic A Complete Unknown. He will also be the musical guest.

Saturday Night Live sent on Saturdays at 11:30 PM ET/8:30 PM PT on NBC.
