Bridges in SENC slowly reopen after winter storm

HOLDEN BEACH & OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Bridges across the Cape Fear region are slowly reopening after hazardous conditions shut them down.

Sunset Beach

The Sunset Beach Police Department (SBPD) announced in a Facebook post that the Sunset Beach Bridge has reopened.

“With the invaluable assistance of the Department of Transportation and several rounds of salting, we are pleased to announce that the Sunset Beach Bridge is now OPEN,” SBPD said.

The bridge was closed last night due to unsafe driving conditions.

The bridge was reportedly becoming icy, and police said the bridge would reopen when conditions improved.

Ocean Isle Beach

One lane of the Odell Williamson Bridge has reopened to traffic.

“The Ocean Isle Beach Police Department will continue to monitor conditions and may have to re-close if necessary. Do not drive unless absolutely necessary,” the Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department (OIBFD) stated in a Facebook post post.

The bridge was closed on Tuesday evening due to unsafe driving conditions.

“Increased accumulation of winter precipitation has created unsafe travel conditions. As soon as the bridge is deemed safe to travel, OIBPD will reopen the bridge. Please do not drive unless absolutely necessary,” OIBFD wrote on their Facebook page.

Holden Beach Bridge

The Holden Beach Bridge has reopened.

In a Facebook post, the Town of Holden Beach announced that the bridge is currently passable.

“Driving conditions remain very hazardous and motorists are encouraged to stay off the roads. If conditions worsen, the bridge is at risk of being closed again,” the city said.

Mayor Holden said police closed the bridge due to cars sliding along the road.
