Comedian and actress Amy Schumer revealed that trolling on social media led to her Cushing’s syndrome diagnosis. The 43-year-old told Alex Cooper on the January 22 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast that she faced a lot of online criticism for her puffy face, dubbed the ‘moon face’. “A year ago, the Internet really came to me,” she recalled.”

Schumer further added that she ignored the trolls at first — “I was like, ‘Okay, everybody, relax'” until doctors commented on the possible diagnosis.

Doctors suspect Cushing’s syndrome

The actor said doctors believed she had Cushing’s syndrome, which caused facial swelling. “The doctors chimed in on the comments and they said, ‘No, no… there’s really something wrong. Your face looks so crazy.’

What is Cushing’s syndrome?

Cushing’s syndrome is a medical condition caused by long-term exposure to high levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. This condition can occur naturally due to the body producing too much cortisol or as a side effect of long-term use of corticosteroid medications.

“At first I was like, ‘Fk off,'” Schumer said. She then realized, “Wait, I’ve had steroid injections for my scars” from her breast reduction and C-section. “So I got these steroid injections, and then it gave me this thing called Cushing’s syndrome — which I wouldn’t have known if the Internet hadn’t hit me so hard.”

Schumer first shared her Cushing’s diagnosis in February 2024.
