Steve Palmer’s Ras Al Khaimah Championship preview

Tyrrell Hatton, Rory McIlroy and others left the Middle East after the Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday, leaving former Ryder Cup star Thorbjorn Olesen as the favorite for this week’s Ras Al Khaimah Championship.

Olesen is the defending champion, having cruised to a six-shot victory 12 months ago, and must be respected when he returns. However, back-to-back 74s at the weekend in Dubai were an untimely dent in confidence, so the Dane can be resisted at low prices.

Steve Palmer’s top tip

Keita Nakajima 22-1

Former world number one amateur Keita Nakajima, top dog in the unpaid ranks for 87 weeks, won four times on the Japan Tour before making his DP World Tour breakthrough at the Indian Open in late March.

The four-shot romp in India was to be the first of many DPWT titles for the top-class Japanese youngster. The 24-year-old finished 2024 in high spirits, finishing 13th in Abu Dhabi, seventh in the DP World Tour Championship and fourth in the Nippon Series Cup on the Japan Tour, and he started 2025 impressively last week.

A Desert Classic debut resulted in a 21st-place finish, and he closed with a spectacular albatross tee shot from 236 yards on the 18th hole. This week he can get going on a track he knows after finishing fourth in Ras Al Khaimah last year.

Nakajima opened slowly with a 72 as he adjusted to Al Hamra 12 months ago, then carded rounds of 66, 66, 67 and went 17 under par for his final 54 holes.

Second best offer

Angel Ayora 40-1

Sweet-swinging Spanish youngster Angel Ayora turned pro at the end of 2023 and then enjoyed a comfortable Challenge Tour rookie campaign. He showed a penchant for desert golf when he finished ninth in the UAE Challenge in April, made his CT breakthrough in September and then finished second in the CT Grand Final in early November.

Ayora was immediately promoted to the DPWT and finished sixth in the Australian PGA in late November, then fifth in the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa in December. He looks the complete package and it’s no wonder LIV bigwigs have been sniffing around. The 20-year-old is focusing on the DPWT – and could threaten a maiden title this week.

Other choices

Wenyi Ding 80-1
Adrien Dumont de Chassart 90-1
George Coetzee 1,000-1

Another rising star could make a strong debut on a straightforward layout in perfect weather. Wenyi Ding, who was third in the amateur world rankings, enjoyed a stellar college career at Arizona State and has proven to be an effective desert golfer.

The 20-year-old turned pro last October after earning a DPWT card through the Global Amateur Pathway and six of his seven starts in the paid ranks have netted a check. Fifth place in the Australian Open in December has been the highlight.

Ding, arguably the best player to come out of Arizona State since Phil Mickelson and Jon Rahm, can make an Al Hamra impact, while Adrien Dumont de Chassart can do the same.

The 24-year-old Belgian appeared on the Korn Ferry Tour for the first time in June 2023 and won his first event. He putted like a god through the first KFT campaign, compiling form numbers of 1-2-8-6-7-10 in his first six events to quickly earn promotion to the PGA Tour.

Dumont de Chassart’s best form in his rookie campaign came too late to save full playing rights, but third in the Bermuda Championship in November and 25th in the RSM Classic meant conditional status for 2025. Ras looks a strong possibility.

And George Coetzee is also worthy of support. The five-time DPWT champion, a proven desert fox, has twice finished second in the Qatar Masters, has a fourth and sixth to his name in Abu Dhabi and a fifth and seventh in the Desert Classic. He loves this region and has Al Hamra form numbers of 27-9-36.

Working his way back to form after wrist surgery, Coetzee carded two rounds of 73 to narrowly miss the cut in Dubai last week, with nothing worse than a bogey on his scorecard. This great putter could suddenly get among the birdies in such a simple and convenient place.
