Snow, ice snarl Savannah airport as cancellations continue

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Travel issues continue at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport as the region recovers from a rare snow and ice storm.

According to the website FlightAware, 90 flights into or out of Savannah were canceled Wednesday, forcing passengers to find alternative travel plans.

“We don’t know if we’re going to stay the night. We were staying downtown so we might end up back downtown wherever we have a good restaurant because it looks like the city is shut down,” said traveler Caleb Englert.

Getting to the airport proved difficult, according to many passengers who said they experienced rough road conditions.

“I felt a little apocalyptic. We just saw cars breaking down, people helping to push. There were no snowplows. We were just following the tracks of the tires in front of us trying to get into the airport safely,” said Akira Bradley, who traveled to Washington, DC

Runways and taxiways remained closed Wednesday while crews worked to remove snow and ice.

“Temperatures falling below freezing by sunset will necessitate keeping the runways closed until they can be reassessed (Thursday) morning,” an airport spokesman said in a statement to WTOC.

As of Wednesday night, more than 40 flights into or out of Savannah had already been canceled Thursday, according to FlightAware.

With major frustrations among travelers, passengers are hoping for improvements in the coming days.

“It’s quite frustrating. I expected to be home late this morning. Of course, due to the weather delays it looks like I may not be able to get home until midnight tonight,” said traveler Mark Kearney.

Passengers are encouraged to check with their airline for flight status and rebooking information.
