Users across the globe reported widespread outages of the popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT.

Reports of the service being unavailable began to mount on Thursday morning, leaving many unable to access the conversational AI tool.

At the time of writing, users have continued to report problems accessing the platform. Tibor Blaho, Lead Engineer at tech company AIPRM, wrote on Thursday morning: “ChatGPT appears to be down at the moment”, before adding: “The OpenAI team is working on service recovery”.

Downdetector, a website that tracks outages of online services, recorded a significant increase in reports of outages for ChatGPT on Thursday morning.

ChatGPT is a large language model AI chatbot. In August 2024, OpenAI, the startup company behind the chatbot, said that ChatGPT had more than 200 million weekly active users, double the number it had in the same period the year before.

The reason for the outage is currently unknown. OpenAIs Status website issued a statement at 07:26 stating: “The problem has been identified and a fix is ​​being implemented.”
