ChatGPT down as thousands report problems worldwide

Thousands of people have reported that they are unable to use the world’s best-known artificial intelligence (AI) tool, ChatGPT

Downdetector, which tracks website crashes, showed that more than 10,000 people reported that the AI chatbot, which is made by OpenAI, was not working in the UK on Thursday.

Users who tried to use it were met with a message that read “the web server reported a bad gateway error”.

OpenAI has yet to publicly comment on the outage. The BBC has contacted the company for comment.

But many people have taken to social media to highlight the issue and the disruption it is causing them.

The outage began around 11:00 GMT on Thursday and users continue to report problems.

ChatGPT’s status page said the app had “experienced elevated error rates” and that the company was “currently investigating”.

Although many people use the free version of the chatbot, the company charges up to $200 per month for its various membership levels.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in December that ChatGPT is used weekly by more than 300 million people worldwide.

It happens after technology companies, including OpenAI, have promised an investment of 500 billion. USD (£405bn) in AI infrastructure in the US.
