Note: This article contains spoilers for “The Night Agent” Season 2.

“The Natagent” Season 2 ended with a realization that many refuse to confront: We are more like our parents than we think.

After giving up his mission to save those he loved, Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) must remedy the wreck he left on his way. While trying to stop a threat to chemical weapons against the United States, he released a witness, stole intelligence and ultimately held a presidential election.

Although he saved Rose (Luciane Buchanan), Peter is not proud of his choices. The Nat agent surrendered to her coach Catherine Weaver (Amanda Warren), but she did not let him just let him.

Catherine tells Peter that he made the same mistakes his father made to protect those he loved, and she gives Peter the same chance he did to atoning them: a new mission as a double agent.

“He is aware of the amount of hatred he probably had to his father, the amount of bitterness he probably had over their relationship and lost time,” Basso told TheWrap. “The more he learns about this business, I think he realizes, the harder it is to make good decisions in the environment and the decisions my father made were the best, given his opportunities.”

Showrunner Shawn Ryan said Peter’s complicated relationship with his late father was what attracted him to develop Matthew Quirk’s novel for Netflix originally, and told TheWrap that the popular Netflix series would not exist if not for the mystery of his own Father’s death.

“It was very personal for me because I lost my dad very quickly and unexpectedly, and the 10th anniversary of his death will actually be the premiere day, which I found was a very symbolic thing this year,” Shawn Ryan told TheWrap ahead of the premiere On January 23 at Season 2.

“There were things I learned about my father after his passing, which was very mysterious to me, nothing as bad as Peter’s father was a traitor or something, but this has always been the central, important part of the show for me,” he added. .

Peter has to confront before he accepts his next mission that what he had annoyed at his father may be what makes them the same.

“He’s about to become him, I think it’s a kind of freaker (Peter),” Basso said. “He doesn’t want to be his father, but it might not be a bad thing.”

“For me, this has always been the central emotional anchor in this show: Does Peter try to be a better man than his father was?” said Ryan.

Peter accepts the mission and sets up perfectly for season 3. This time he will commit his life to an even more exclusive position than the Natagent team. He must determine the exact nature of Monro’s relationship with Hagan from the inside by winning their confidence and passing classified information.

Peter and Rose’s relationship are also at stake in the final. The agent must make the difficult decision to tell Rose that they cannot communicate as long as he is on this new mission. Rose wants security, but Peter is craving the hustle and bustle of the Natagent’s lifestyle. In the end, she agrees not to call him or come and look for him, and they go tearfully apart.

The footage has already started for Season 3 and Ryan teased that “It’s only the beginning.” Basso teased to TheWrap that the team completed section 1 of Istanbul and will return to New York to record the rest of the series.

“What we were able to get on the camera is just a kind of mind-boggling for me,” Basso said of the first episodes Istanbul sequences. “We got things that I felt would have taken months and months and months of preparation to plan, and we did it accidentally. There were things that happened on the camera that were not planned that was just something amazing, so I’m psychy over it. ”

Season 2 of “The Night Agent” is now streamed on Netflix.
