When Trump returns to the office, ‘SNL’ wonders high if America has its first elected king

“Saturday Night Live” marked the election in November with a smirking kiss by President Donald Trump’s ring, but it returned to more prickly satire on Saturday night with a history lesson.

The show enrolled Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda to recreate her role in “Hamilton” as a rapping founder, except this time Miranda was closed by James Austin Johnson’s peacock, rolling Trump.

Mirandas Hamilton joined a role crew of colonial characters in wigs for the Cold Open.

“What matters is the nation we are building,” he said. “Because in America, all men are created equal. America not England. We make the successor. And we want leaders but nothing. In America we will never have a king.”

Johnson’s Trump interrupted and took over.

“Never never say,” he said, adding, “of course, even though I’m not many ways. I’m in my king era.”

He talked about Trump’s efforts to end diversity, justice and inclusion (dei) roles in the federal government.

“Dei is over, it’s dead,” he said. “Workplaces must return to look like the TV show ‘The Office.”

He switched several times to different times and eventually landed on his dedication, which he described as “a huge success.”

“It was because of cold and fear,” he said. “But we had a lot of surprise guests. Like Melania. It was nice.”

Johnson’s Trump shouted billionaires present.

“Zuck. Bezos. Tim Apple. And of course, Elon,” he said. “We love Elon. But to quote some of his own children, I don’t want him in my life.”

Trump then began to focus increasingly on Miranda, who held his position in the shadows.

Trump said he pointed to the thumb towards the colonial characters and said, “What weird way of dressing, right?

Later he noticed Miranda’s frozen attitude on stage.

“Oh look at Lin,” he said. “Look at how bad he wants to do a rap. … he doesn’t get to do it. Oh, the audience would have eaten it up.”

Trump continued to focus on Miranda’s price shelf. Miranda-a Emmy, Grammy and Tony winner-are an Oscar who is short to participate in an exclusive group of EGOT winners who have at least one of each.

“He’s at a sniffing distance from an egot, and he has to stand there until I’m done,” Trump said, trying to get Miranda to crack and eventually do it. “Lindy, Lindy, Lindy, Lindy. … Lin-Manuel Miranda Cosgrove. There he is.”

Timothée Chalamet, nominated for an Oscar for his role as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown”, was host and musical guest. Chalamet performed several Dylan songs.
