Greggs recalls packets of steak bakes after error | UK News

Greggs is recalling packets of steak bakes after a packaging error.

The popular bakery chain has warned that some packages of steak pie contain sausage, bean and cheese melts, meaning some sulphites are not declared on the label.

The UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) said the mislabelling means the product is a “possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulfur dioxide and/or sulphites”.

The recall only applies to packages of two frozen steak bakes – sold exclusively in the stores of the Iceland supermarket chain – which have a best before date of 19 May 2025.

No other products, date codes or lots are believed to have been affected.

Customers who have recently purchased the product have been asked not to consume it, but to return it to their nearest Island store for a full refund.

Sulfites occur naturally in some foods, but are also used as preservatives and bleaching agents in the production of other foods and drinks, according to Allergy UK.

They are added to food and drinks to slow down how quickly they disappear and to brighten their color.

Those with a sensitivity to sulfites or sulfur dioxide may experience stomach problems or problems with their airways when sulfite-containing foods interact with stomach acid.

Sulphite sensitivity is more common in people who have asthma, and although reactions are usually mild, there are a very small number of reports of serious allergic reactions to sulphites, including anaphylaxis, according to the charity.
