Lin-Manuel Miranda portrays Alexander Hamilton role in Cold Open

Lin-Manuel Miranda reprized his iconic Alexander Hamilton role during a surprise appearance at Saturday Night Live.

The sketch comedy show’s latest cold open spoofed the Founding Fathers when they created the United States Declaration of Independence.

After being introduced by Andrew Dismukes’ John Hancock, Miranda says, “Our lives don’t matter if we lose them in the cause of freedom. What matters is the nation we built. Because in America all men are created equal. America, not England, we will win the succession, and we will have leaders, but no thing in America, we will never have a king. ”

However, James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump interrupted Miranda, saying, “Never say never. I am in my king era. ” (Trump began his second term earlier this week with his inauguration on Monday.)

As the founding fathers stand frozen in the background, Johnson’s Trump continues, “Like the founding fathers, I too am creating a new country. And like them, we make it very easy. They are over. It’s dead. Workplaces must return to looking like the TV show The office: Mostly white people, but with a funny black guy who has it really bad. We need to bring back Stanley culture, right? Regarding crosswords and regarding pretzel day. “

Trump continued to tease Miranda, saying: “Look at Lin. He was tricked into coming here and now he’s frozen on stage. “

He then highlights what he called his “great first week” in office after his “inauguration was a huge success.” Johnson’s Trump touched on some of the first executive orders the president signed, including one calling on the federal government to define sex as only male or female and others that pulled the United States out of the Paris Agreement and the World Health Organization.

Trump says he also has “to make sure all my cabinet positions are filled. We fill my closet with some of the best people. They are all very good, except for most of them. Oh man what’s up SNL Does it work? Who will play (Pete) Hegseth? I mean, look at these guys back here. None of them have the build, none have the jaw. Lots of (Mark) Zuckerberg opportunities though. “

Before wrapping up, Johnson’s Trump turned his attention back to Frozen Miranda, who struggled not to laugh: “Oh, look at Lin. Look at how bad he wants to do a rap and he doesn’t get to do it. Oh, the audience would have eaten it right up. We don’t hear that. He’s within earshot of an ego, and he has to stand there until I’m done. Lin-Manuel Miranda Cosgrove, there he is. ”

Miranda played Alexander Hamilton in the Broadway musical Hamiltonfor which he also created and wrote music and lyrics. He left the role in July 2016.

The entire creative team worked extremely hard to bring the brilliant artist Bob Dylan, a man whose music and career has become a guiding light for me, and it is a tremendous honor to go to these awards shows. “

“It’s such an amazing experience, but I just keep losing,” quips Chalamet. “And each time it gets harder to pretend that it’s not happening.” He then throws to a video montage of all the times he has lost a prize.

“The most embarrassing part is that I’ve had this sad little speech in my pocket for four years that I’ve never had a chance to read, so I thought maybe tonight I could read it to everyone here,” the actor continues. “Why don’t we all here, just pretend we’re at an awards show, and I’m going to hand you this envelope and just say, ‘The award goes to,’ and you read it.”
