The Kansas City Chiefs has been the target of a prolonged smear campaign on social media recently, and the stomachs among the team’s detractors appear to have reached a fever pitch this weekend.
To hear some fans tell it, the Chiefs are constant recipients of perceived favoritism among the NFL’s referees, who always side with the defending Super Bowl champions — especially when it comes to toughening up passing penalties.
On Saturday, NFL insider Adam Schefter added fuel to the conspiratorial fire by sending out a tweet that appeared to take a crack at Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Then on Sunday morning, Schefter doubled down on the baseless narrative and issued a misleading statistic that — on its face — would lend credence to the perceived disparity in judging.
It is unclear if Schefter actually believes in the bizarre conspiracy or if he is just trying to generate engagement on his social media channels.
Regardless, many notable members of Chiefs Twitter gave their two cents about Schefter’s false narrative.
Take a look at what they had to say:

I understand why the anonymous account feeds this: they get paid by engagement and that’s their hustle.
But for @AdamSchefterthat earns *9 million per year*, feed into this on arguably the best football day of the year, just to satisfy the algorithm, is a disservice to fans.

If the Chiefs win today, they will be more than unbearable in the postgame and rightfully so.
It’s insane to have legitimate media voices claiming their success is handed to them.
If the three-peat wasn’t motivation enough…boy, they have it now.

They will talk about the judges, don’t worry,
If the Bills win – purely officiated play.
If the Chiefs win – blame the referees. https://t.co/YUFpRwEphF— what about the CHIEFS (@hbtCHIEFS) 26 January 2025
