The New Jersey area rattled by an earthquake with a strength of 2.4

Paramus, nj – Northern New Jersey was rattled by a minor earthquake Friday afternoon, According to US Geological Survey.

The quake with a force of 2.4 hit just after 1 pm local time and was centered only one kilometer outside the paramus.

The earthquake had a depth of just under 5 miles, the USGS said.

There are no initial reports of damage.

Friday’s earthquake comes only 9 months after a much more powerful earthquake of 4.8 hit in northwestern New Jersey – the most powerful earthquake in 240 years in New Jersey. Researchers have since discovered a new mistake that can explain why the earthquake was felt stronger further away in New York City than closer to the epicenter.

Seismologists say that although low -strength earthquakes can feel routine for them along the west coast, they will be felt over a wider area in the east.

Mountains in the West are constantly pushed up, leading to broken stones that do not transmit seismic energy as easily as more condensed, less seismically disturbed soil in the east. So an earthquake of the same size in the east will be felt over a much wider area than in the west.
