F-35 caught on video tumbling vertically into the runway at Alaskan Air Base

A very dramatic video has emerged showing an accident that took place around 1 p.m. 13 local time today at Eielson AFB in Alaska, home to dozens of USAF F-35A common strike. The video is recorded from the ramp near a KC-135R strato tanks and shows the F-35 turning into the track area on the base with its gear expanded. A massive fireball occurs on influence. A parachute is seen nearby. Fortunately, the pilot pushed out and survived.

The video circulating on social media can be viewed below.

ONE Press release from the base says the following:

“An airplane event took place this afternoon, resulting in significant damage to Flight Kun at. 12.49 today. It is known that the impact site is on the base within the fence line of the Eielson Air Force base, Alaska.

The pilot is safe and has been transported to Bassett Army Hospital for further evaluation. Emergency personnel respond.

Stopping at Richardson Highway next to Eielson AFB poses a security risk and prevents recovery efforts. Federal law prohibits photography along this stretch of the highway.

“Our people are our most important resource and we are committed to securing their safety and security,” said Colonel Paul Townsend, commander of the 354th Fighter wing. “I can assure you that the US Air Force will conduct a thorough investigation in the hope of minimizing the chances of such events happening again.”

It is still unclear what made the plane hit the runway vertically. We will update this post as more information becomes available.
