State’s unemployment rises in December – WRBI Radio

(StateWide) – Indiana’s unemployment rate crossed up last month.

The State Department of Workforce Development says Indiana’s unemployment rate went from 4.4 percent in November to 4.5 percent in December.

In comparison, Indiana’s unemployment rate above the national average is 4.1 percent.

In addition, Indiana’s workforce participation rate is 63.5 percent compared to the national rate of 62.5 percent.

This rate is the percentage of Hoosiers 16 and the elderly who either work or actively look for work.

Those who are not in the workforce primarily include students, retirees and other non-working populations, such as people who are unable to work due to a disability or illness, or adults responsible for their family’s childcare needs.

Indiana’s total workforce is 3,451,468 and is at its highest on the record.

December 2024 Total private employment is 2,872,600, an increase of 2,100 from the previous month and 608,300 over the trough in April 2020.

Industries that experienced job increases this month included:

  • Private education and healthcare (+2,500)
  • Professional and Business Services (+1.300)
  • Financial activities (+900)

Per. December 27. There were 84,578 open positions throughout the state.

From the week ended on December 28, Indiana had 24,631 continued demands for unemployment insurance.
