Detroit Tigers signs Tommy Kahnle, Free Agent Reliever, one year appointment

Detroit Tigers has added their bullpen.

The tigers signed right -handed reliever Tommy Kahnle To one year, $ 7.75 million contract, according to several sources with knowledge of the agreement. The 35-year-old, known for its evil shifts, is a swing-and-miss reliever for high leverage situations that fit exactly what Tigers needed to improve their bullp.

The deal is awaiting a physical examination.

Kahnle, who turns 36 in early August, recorded a 2.11 era with 19 walks and 46 strikes over 42 ⅔ laps in 50 relief performance for New York Yankees in the 2024 season. He ranked Elite in Whiff Rate (36%) and above average at strike speed (25.7%), but he also ranked below average in gait (10.6%).

He also had an elite 59.8% soil ball speed.

Kahnle threw four pitch types last season: Changeup (73.1%), four-stitch fastball (19.3%), the slider (5.6%) and sinks (2%). His fastball was an average of 94.2 km / h and his shift generated a 38.9% whiff rate. He thrived against both right -handed and left -handed men when Righties hit .213 with a .684 ops and Lefties hit .169 with a .575 ops.

Before coming to Tigers, Kahnle beat 10 MLB seasons for four teams: Colorado Rockies (2014-15), Chicago White Sox (2016-17), Yankees (2017-20, 2023-24) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2022) .

He reviewed Tommy John Surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow in August 2020, missing the entire 2021 season. He has been injured in each season since then, missed four months in 2022 with the right forearm inflammation, two months in 2023 with biceps tendinitis and two months in 2024 with the right shoulder inflammation.

Kahnle owns a 3.47 era in his MLB career spanning 373⅔ laps in 390 games. He has only eight savings in his career, but he has the swing-and-miss potential to deal with hidden situations for Tigers in the 2025 season. He also has four years of experience after the season with 30 laps in 27 games.

By 2025, Tigers five reliefs have locked into the opening day list: Kahnle, Right Manager Jason Foleyleft -handed reliever Tyler Holtonright Will vest and right Beau Brieske.
