“While a company announces the introduction of their volunteer recalls, the FDA officially classifies these recalls in an FDA enforcement report at a later date,” the agency wrote in a statement to USA Today. “Once the Agency’s hazard assessment is completed, the entrance to the enforcement report is updated with a classification (Class I, II or III) reflecting the relative degree of health hazard associated with the revoked product (s).”

Per. FDA’s siteClassifications include:

  • Class I – The use or exposure to a product can cause serious negative health consequences or death.
  • Class II – Using or exposure to a product can cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or the likelihood of serious negative health consequences is remote.
