How it happened

A 12.5-point lower dog at Tipoff, Indiana was the aggressor in the first half against Purdue in the Mackey Arena. Boilermakers led 11-6 early on a Trey Kaufman-Renn second chance Layup, but Hoosiers grabbed a 21-20 advantage on a Luke Goode 3-Pointer with 10:21 to play in the first half. IU held this lead for the rest of half, leading at seven on three occasions, before setting a four-point advantage during the break. Goode (13 points) and Mackenzie Mgbako (11 points) were great, just like Oumar Ballo, who had nine in the first half. The Hoosians also went 4-for-13s in the 3s and grabbed seven offensive rebounds, which led to nine points. Revenue was a problem for IU in the first half when Hoosiers had 10, which led to 13 points for Boilermakers.

Purdue took the lead 33 seconds into the second half after a 3-point game from Kaufman-Renn and another bucket from the Silver Creek product. Boilermakers stretched the lead to seven on 56-49 on another chance Putback from Kaufman-Renn, but Hoosiers closed within five of 58-53 on a Trey Galloway Layup just before under-12 media lessons. Braden Smith knocked in a couple of free kicks by 1:51 to play to give Purdue a 74-72 benefit. A ballo turnover on the subsequent possession gave Purdue possession, and CJ Cox shared a few free kicks with 1:37 back to give Purdue a 75-72 lead. IU answered with a Trey Galloway Layup to get Hoosiers within one of 75-74. Out of a timeout, Kaufman-Renn missed a late shot in the field, and Galloway scored at the other end to give IU a 76-75 lead with 29 seconds left. Kaufman-Renn gave the Purdue the 77-76 lead with 11 seconds left on a jumper in the field and on IU’s subsequent possession, Myles Rice drove on the floor and missed a shot where there was some contact but no mistakes called. IU had to ugly Purdue after rebound and Loyer made both free kicks. IU’s length of the court box resulted in a turnover on its final possession out of a timeout with 3.3 seconds left. The Hoosians went to Kaufman-Renn, who lowered a couple of free kicks to seal the 81-76 victory.

Mgbako led Hoosiers with 25 points on 10-for-17 shooting in 36 minutes. Galloway scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and also had five assists. Ballo added 14 points and eight rebounds.
