Sundance Award winners 2025: ‘Atropia,’ ‘Twinless’ and more

The comedy “Atropia”, starring Alia Shawkat as an Iraqi-American actress thrown into the role of a rebellion on a military role-playing facility, won the top prize in the Sundance Film Festival’s American dramatic competition Friday.

“This timely and timeless first feature was both fun and cursing in his portrayal of the war theater,” read a quote from the dramatic competition jury, which consisted of directors Reinaldo Marcus Green and Celine Song and actor Arian Moayed.

Like many of the independent films that premiered on this muted edition of Sundance, “Atropia,” written and directed by Hailey Gates has not yet sold to a distributor. The comedy also does not have the comedy “Twinless” about a man struggling to treat the loss of his identical twin, although the film won the festival’s American dramatic competition audience award and a special jury award to act for his star Dylan O’Brien.

At the time of the festival’s awards ceremony, only two films had managed great sales: the Body-Horror movie “Together” with Alison Brie and Dave Franco and the elegant period drama “Train Dreams” starring in Joel Edgeron. Both movies played out of competition.
