A messy mixture of freezing rain and rain is possible in the middle of the week Wednesday

West Michigan – Now that we left the month of January behind us, things look warmer and less snowy when we start February. So far we have counted 52 inches of snow in Grand Rapids this season, well on our way to our average/normal 77 inches for the whole season. We have also put the brutally cold Arctic air behind us, giving wind litter of almost -30 degrees. Although we cannot say with absolute certainty, there is some moderate confidence that our coldest part of the season is behind us.

We may not have Arctic air on the horizon or heavy snow, but this is the time of year that temperatures are hovering around the freezing and freezing rain and ice can become a problem. Our expected models continue to show at least the chance or the possibility of some freezing rain from a system on Wednesday night Thursday night timeframe.

A low pressure system that is lifted into Michigan from the south and west could produce some freezing rain on Wednesday night through Wednesday night. See the picture below. The card is valid until 7 p.m. 18 Wednesday. The widespread pink shows the freezing rain.

As we come in on Thursday in the middle of the morning, we should see a transition to rain. This system will pull away from Michigan later in the day on Thursday, and very little (if any) is expected as the deeper humidity lifts into Canada. See photo below valid for 5 p.m. 18 Thursday.

Of course, the trail of this system can change, which means we could wrap the warmer air, limit or mitigate some ice or freezing rain potential. The second scenario? Colder air could mean it will be snow instead of ice and rain, so the track certainly carries to look at. Be sure to hold on to later forecasts, our Fox 17 team of meteorologists tracking things all week.
