More restaurants in the DC area will close Monday to ‘Day Without Immigrants’-NBC4 Washington

Several restaurants in the DC area will be closed Monday for a “day without immigrants”, a protest designed to show the importance of immigrants’ contributions to their community.

The movement encourages immigrants to stay home from work and school and refrain from shopping in the midst of a crash on immigration from the Trump administration.

“DC depends deeply on immigrants who work vital jobs in our local economy, pay taxes and make the city a living place to live,” said Republic Cantina, a participating restaurant in DC, in an Instagram post on Sunday. “We have been horrified to see the roll -out of policies that tear immigrants from their homes – which is both inhumane and will cause massive damage to the local communities and for small businesses.”

Some of the other companies that participate include Pearl’s Bagels and Hiraya in DC and La Casita PupuserĂa, Tacos El Pariente and Centrado CafĂ© Shop in Maryland.

“A day without immigrants is a day without Bagels,” Pearl’s Bagels said in an Instagram story on Sunday. “Our staff will receive a paid day off to have their voices heard and emphasize the importance of immigrants for our community and the local economy.”

Since returning to the Oval Office, President Donald Trump has unfolded several immigration policies, including an attempt to terminate the constitutional right to birth right with citizenship and allow arrests in schools, churches and other sensitive locations. There have also been American immigration and customs enforcement attacks in major US cities with hundreds of arrests a day, according to data released by ICE via X.

There was also a day without immigrants in February 2017 in response to immigration policies adopted during Trump’s first period.
