Trump agrees to put Canadian customs rates on break, says Trudeau

President Donald Trump puts additional tariffs on Canadian imports for 30 days after a call with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who temporarily admitted some concessions to temporarily ward off the charges.

Trump and Trudeau spoke via phone Monday, hours before another 25% tariff rates were to take effect on Canadian goods coming to the United States. In a post on X, Trudeau said Canada will implement a $ 1.3 billion border plan and designate a fentanyl czar.

In addition, Canada will strengthen its limit to new helicopters, technology, staff and improved coordination with US authorities. He added that almost 10,000 employees are and will work on border protection.

“We show cartels as terrorists, secure 24/7 eyes on the border, launching a Canada-US joint strike strength to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering,” Trudeau wrote. “I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl, and we are backing it by $ 200 million.”

“Suggested tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together,” he added.

Trump has long said that Canada and Mexico have failed to do enough to prevent the flow of illegal migrants and drugs, especially fentanyl, from these nations into the United States also claims Trump that the United States has subsidized Canada worth $ 200 Billions annually.

“We have to protect Americans, and that is my duty as president to secure security for everyone,” Trump wrote in a statement on Saturday when he imposed customs. “I made a promise of my campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs in pouring over our borders, and Americans voted overwhelming to it.”

Hours before his call to Trudeau, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she would deploy 10,000 troops to the US and Mexico border over customs threats.

Trump has promised to introduce a 25% duty on all Canadian and Mexican goods as well as a 10% duty on Canadian energy and a 10% duty on all goods entering the United States from China. The tariffs in Canada and China were to take effect Tuesday at midnight.
