US President Donald Trump agreed to put his planned tariffs on Mexico and Canada for 30 days on Monday. The decision is coming as both countries took steps to tackle his concerns about border security and drug trafficking.
The break follows days of uncertainty that raised fears of a Trade War In North America. Such a conflict could have slowed economic growth, increased prices and strained central trade conditions.
Trump announced on social media, “I am very pleased with this initial result, and the tariffs announced on Saturday will be a break for a period of 30 days to see if a final financial agreement with Canada can be structured or not. Fairness for everyone! ”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed the break at X and said Canada will take several measures, including the appointment of a fentanyl -czar, appoint Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations and launch a common task force with the United States to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering.

Trade war averted? Well, for now

Mexico has also reached a similar understanding with the United States. The break gives time for negotiations on drug smuggling and illegal immigration. Meanwhile, the 10 percent duty stays on Chinese imports in place where Trump is soon expected to talk to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
While the immediate risk of a trade war is relieved, uncertainty remains. Trump could reintroduce tariffs, and he is also preparing to advertise tariffs on imports from the European Union.
On Saturday, Trump had instructed 25 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada and a separate 10 percent duty on Canadian oil, natural gas and electricity. Although he had previously stated these actions, they still surprised investors, businesses and legislators.
Analysts suggested that tariffs could slow down economic growth, reduce incomes and raise prices. However, Trump defended them as needed to tackle illegal immigration, drug smuggling, and what he sees as an unreasonable treatment of the United States
Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the break after Trump called a “very friendly conversation.”

He added, “I look forward to participating in these negotiations with President Sheinbaum as we try to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two countries.”
