Defense wins championships according to the old saying, but it may not be Los Angeles Lakers’ formula to win now that they have paired Luka Dončić with LeBron James.

The Athletic’s Jovan Buha said in the latest episode of his Buha’s block Podcast that “The plan to win will just get smaller and try to outscore teams” based on conversations he has had with people in the organization.

Absent additional additions between now and Thursday’s 7 p.m. 15 A shopping deadline, there is not much alternative to head coach JJ Redick and his staff.

Lakers are 21. In defensive rating (114.1), per. Nba.comAnd the Dončić trade for all its benefits makes them worse at that end of the floor. Los Angeles lost an elite defender in Anthony Davis and is now reduced to start Jaxson Hayes in the center. Going from Max Christie and Dončić is also a net downgrade in terms of circumference defense.

During Tuesday’s Initial Press Conference for Dončić recognized general manager Rob Pelinka The need for a center and said a trade to meet that needed to realize:

Dave McMenamine @Mcten

Pelinka: “We know we have a need for a big one.” He says the market is “dry” for big men and expects a “movement around the margins” between now and Thursday. A bigger feature in high season. Pelinka says he wants to consult JJ Redick about the caregiver who fits his coaching vision. https://t.co/j1yuwdb777

Maybe the right player will be available at a reasonable price and he can make a meaningful defensive influence in the paint.

Otherwise, infringement figures are to be Lakers’ call card for the rest of the season until Pelinka and Front Office have more time to evaluate the market and consider potential goals.
