Sports Report: Lakers make another great trade

Howdy, I am your host, Houston Mitchell. Let’s get right to the news.

From Dan Woike: Rob Pelinka, Lakers’ General Manager and frequent goals for the team’s fanbase for passivity in the trading market, sat in front of cameras and told everyone that there was no way to wave a “magical spell” and make the right center appear.

For several months, Lakers’ Front Office signaled that there was no center available to fit their price range and list of needs, needs that became only more obvious when Pelinka treated Anthony Davis and Max Christie for Luka Doncic.

And Tuesday, when he was sitting next to Doncic, Pelinka promised to meet this need while praying for patience.

But Wednesday night with the NBA’s trade deadline a little more than half a day away, a center appeared – and there was hardly any magic involved.

Lakers acquired 23-year-old 7-foot Mark Williams from Charlotte Hornets and emptied what was only a little back in their asset arsenal to acquire a talented player with a story of injuries.

To get Williams, a previous choice of the first round, Laker’s Rookie Sent Dalton Knecht, a 2030 first round of pick-swap and their 2031 unprotected first round elections to Hornets. Lakers also included forward CAM Reddish to create a list of space they could fill in the buyout market.

UCLA Basketball

From Anthony de Leon: The highly expected matchup between UCLA and Ohio State-to-two of the country’s top-10 woman’s basketball team turned into a battle over who could generate offensive rhythm.

In the end, No. 1 UCLA came out on top when Bruins made a three-point lead to a 13-point Rout that averted a cunning No. 8 Ohio State to secure a 65-52 Big Ten Victory at Pauley Pavilion.

UCLA, which led at one point with 11, entered the fourth quarter and clung to a two-point lead. It was quickly erased by a three-pointer of Buckeyes.

But a scoring space led Bruins, led by Kiki Rice and Gabriela Jaquez, who had eight and nine points respectively in the quarter.

Dodgers

From Jack Harris: For the first of what is definitely many times, after a blockbuster season of seemingly unlimited watch list expenses, Dodgers players were asked about the same Hot-Button topic last weekend.

Were they surprised how the rest of the sport turned back in the light of the team’s freewheeling winter, where Dodgers made half a dozen significant signings and blew past all other teams’ payroll?

Were they agreed with the argument that has arisen in some corners of the industry that the defense masters’ stop-at-no costs could be poor for baseball and potentially harmful to the sport’s already fragile scale of competitive balance?

And most of all, they felt like Mlb’s new evil empire villain with big money with goals on their backs before they even reported for the start of spring training?

Not surprisingly, Dodgers saw things differently. And in their first public performance as a team during Saturday’s Dodgersfest -Fan event, they responded with answers that painted another picture of what has become the league’s biggest story out of season.

From Benjamin Royer: Chad Bowden and Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman worked together to build a football program that led The Fighting Irish to the national championship game last month.

So when the USC hired Bowden on January 24 to become the Trojans General Manager-a ever-growing title and position in the modern college-football landscape-ranging a big question: What would the relationship between Trojans coach Lincoln Riley and Bowden look like?

Bowden, whose wages are expected to exceed $ 1 million, accelerated the bonding process by moving in with the coach – at least temporarily.

“I’ve been able to live at coach Riley’s house during the last week and a half,” Bowden said at his initial news conference on Wednesday morning. “It’s been a really good experience. I have been able to have some of his steaks and balsamic Mickey Mantles steaks that he is doing. “

Horse racing

From John Cherwa: A lawsuit against Santa Anita leaders claims officials on the legendary track that conspired for blaming teachers of the horse death crisis in 2019.

The case filed by former long -time advertising director Mike Willman claims that Santa Anita “directly and indirectly instructed (Willman) to mislead government suborders, regulators and the public about what was really going on and in a minimum confusing and dislike, so the public would never find out the reasons why so many horses died. “

Attorneys for Willman filed the case on November 27, after the 19-year-old employee was fired in March to allegedly directed a slurry against one of his employees. The case claims it was a joke and claims retaliation, wrongful termination, age discrimination and defamation.
