New study suggests that the benefits are to fail people with mental health conditions who want to work

  • New study suggests that 200,000 people claiming that health and disability benefits are ready for work now if the right job or support was available.
  • Comes as the number of young people with a mental health condition that is financially inactive due to long -term illness reaches over a quarter of a million (270,000).
  • Monitoring of Health and Disability Distribution System, which needs to be revealed in the spring to ensure that it provides meaningful support to help long -term ill back to work.

New research published by the Department of Work and Pensions shows that almost half (44%) of people with a mental health state expect to be able to work in the future if their health improves.

This comes as the number of adolescents (aged 16 to 34) who are financially inactive due to long -term illness and have a mental state when 270,000. This number has risen consistently in the last decade and has increased by 60,000 (26%) in the last year alone. The equivalent figure for all people in the workplace (16 to 64) is 790,000-one increase of 140,000 (22%) in the last year.

Labor aspirations on Health and Disability Employee Survey also find that a third (32%) of those who claim health and disability benefits believe they can work now or in the future. (5%) say they would be ready now if the right job or support was available. This is equivalent to about 200,000 individuals.

The study also finds that they are out of job overwhelmingly seeing work as an important part of their identity and a route to higher confidence, happiness and security.

In further evidence that the current system is pushing people away from work, the study revealed that 50% of people who are on health and disability benefits and are not currently at work said they were concerned that they are not would get their benefits back if they tried paid employment and it did not work.

It comes as work and retirement secretary Liz Kendall visits Workbridge Charity, who offers support for people who are unable to work due to mental ill health to hear how they support people with mental health relationships with work.

In response to the sharp research results, the work has been working and the retirement secretary said that the report shows the need to reform find work.

The upcoming reforms will be an important part of the government’s plan for change to increase employment by breaking down barriers to opportunities – to create a welfare system that promotes tailoring living standards.

Secretary and Pension Secretary, Rt Hon Liz Kendall MP said:

Today’s report shows that the broken benefits system is to fail people with mental health conditions who want to work.

People who claim that health and disability benefits have been classified by the system as “can’t work” and shut out of jobs and have been ignored – once they have shouted for support.

It’s a serious failure. It’s bad for people, bad for companies that miss out on significant talent and bad for the economy.

Especially for young people, being out of work can have a scarring that lasts life.

On time for spoken day, it’s time to change how we support people with long -term health conditions, such as a mental health, so they have a reasonable chance and choice to work.

On his visit to Workbridge, Kendall will talk to experts to hear their insight into how the government and employers can better meet the fluctuating nature of people’s mental health – to ensure that people’s views and voices are in the heart of changes affecting them.

We know that being in work has a positive effect on people’s mental and physical health – giving people confidence and independence as well as financial benefits.

The United Kingdom remains the only G7 country that has higher levels of economic inactivity now than before the pandemic, with the benefits of Bill Spiral -shaped – largely driven by the increase in people claiming inability to mental health conditions that had not received it Care and treatment they deserve.

The reforms of the Health and Disability Distribution System to be revealed in a Greenbook this spring will consider these issues and how the government can tackle these barriers to employment, and the government will work closely with charities, organizations and disabled people to secure their votes helps shape any suggestions for reform.

The Green Book will set important ambitions to create a system that is more fair for people with disabilities – and offers support for work that takes into account the realities of their health and life conditions, and justice to the taxpayer by reducing the benefits.

The reforms are expected to build on Get Britain, which works with White Book, which accounted for the first steps to achieve the government’s target 80% employment rate, increase growth and run down into poverty in every corner of our country.

Successful steps have already been taken to offer work and life-changing support, with a record number of people with mental health conditions receiving employment advice through the NHS Talking Therapies program.

Alongside this support, the government has run record financing for NHS – so that all people can get the care they need – and have promised:

  • 8,500 more mental healthcare professionals
  • Mental Health Support Teams In Each School
  • Open access to mental health in each community
