Lakers won this deal. And not just on the default scale for “The team that lands the better player usually wins the trade.” Getting Dončić is a huge W for this season, for next season, for years after the future, for marketing, to international appeal and for relevance in the modern NBA. In my eyes, the Slovenian guard had a better case for admission to the honored top 75 list than Anthony Davis, and it was three years ago. It is even more clear since.

Dončić is a do-all offensive star capable of being the best player and leader of a championship team. Davis is not. Lakers’ fit may be a bit off unless LeBron James gives up control of the ball and his statistics. For the time being, this feels like a reverse version of Milwaukee’s famous Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Oscar Robertson of 1970, only with the young franchise star moving to the aging playful city. The torch that the ad never seemed to wish they should be transferred immediately from James to Dončić for Lakers to get traction on this ASAP.

Lakers may have sacrificed their current success for the visions of the future. This deal came a few hours after Lakers beat Knicks at Madison Square Garden for their eighth victory in 10 games to climb within a game of fourth in the west. But now Lakers is facing several questions that go into the trade deadline for the trade deadline:

  • When does Dončić return from the calf stem that has sidelined him since Christmas?
  • When he first returns how long will the learning curve be to implement a new primary ball trader?
  • What traits can Lakers do before Thursday’s deadline to strengthen their front line after losing Davis?

Despite these questions, this was a no-brainer movement for Lakers, a franchise built to acquire stars. Dončić adds his name to them as colleagues who were only the one-name, such as Wilt, Kareem, Shaq, Pau and LeBron, who took up Lakers at one point in their careers.

Lakers now has their superstar order from the LeBron era to Dončić-era-adds a 25-year-old Fenom, with five 1. Hold All-Nbas already on his resume that just goes into his career.

With a rare chance of adding a generation talent, Lakers rained to get him and find out the rest later. The focus of this team is suddenly changing to next season and on – this season is finished as a title competition whose lakers ever were.

The next decision lies with LeBron James. Is he inside or out? It’s his choice-he has a non-trade and an opt-out this summer. As a 40 -year -old, he is likely to conclude that his limited future is best used elsewhere. Warriors are on line 1.

The picture for this season is a little cloudy than it was two days ago. Luka Dončić comes back from an injury and probably not in the best shape. Lakers have a number of power forward, but do not have a starting caliber center that can match with Nuggets ‘Nikola Jokić, Clippers’ Ivica Zubac or … Anthony Davis. They were a bottom-10 defensive team with Davis on the guard schedule and they probably won’t improve that end of the floor without him.

Long -term lakers have a franchise corner for the next several years. Dončić should be pretty easy to build around, and other good players probably wouldn’t mind moving to LA to supplement Lakers’ latest star.
