Aircraft with 10 aboard is missing near Nome

Anchorage, Alaska (KTUU) – A plane was reported missing near Nome late Thursday afternoon, according to officials.

Jim West, Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Manager in Nome, said a plane went down with 10 people on board.

The aircraft – a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan -Fly owned by Bering Air – was reported to have flighted from Unalakleet to Nome, According to Nome Volunteer Fire Department.

The flight started from Unalakleet at. 14.37, according to Bering Air Director of Operations David Olson.

The white mountain fire manager Jack Adams told Alaska’s news source that the plane disappeared from the radar somewhere along the coast of Nome to Topkok. He also said that they have crews that are actively looking for an approx. 30 km long stretch in this area.

“They are ready to be out all night, they want to search here until they find them or anyone else find them,” Adams said. “If they find nothing, we will probably gather another crew to go and help.”

Adams said the sea ice is “kind of virgin” and difficult to cross, so the earth crews travel on the Iditarod path to search.

“We hope (the plane) is on land to be in the water would be the worst case,” he said.

Alaska State Trooper reported in a dispatch that the flight had nine passengers and a pilot on board. Troopers said they were contacted by Alaska Rescue Coordination Center at. 16 regarding the missing plan.

The voluntary department stated that it did an active land search from the communities of Nome and White Mountain, but weather and visibility issues limit the air search.

“The word is that all aircraft are grounded, there is zero visibility. Basically, you can’t see anything from the air or the earth, and in the dark it is a hard job to look for something in zero visibility, ”said Adams.

A nome search and rescue group on Snowmacher and other vehicles are preparing to answer the place, West said.

Nome Volunteer Department wrote on its social sides that families should seek support from Norton Sound.

“We ask the public to think of those who may be missing at this time, but due to weather and security concerns, do not form individual search parties,” the message reads.

The Nome Volunteer Department also wrote that the coastguard scopes the area, and says the C-130 will fly in a grid pattern in an attempt to find the missing place. The C-130 also has special equipment for search and rescue that allows them to see people or objects under low visibility conditions.

The air defense, which is stationed in Elmendorf, also provides flight support.

The voluntary department also sent to their Facebook, a photo of a SAR picture report on ice conditions, which were provided by Rick Thoman from UK using photos from NOAA.

The volunteer department said, “From this we can see a lead in the ice near the coast as well as an ice pack.”
