It happened around 1 p.m. 18 near Crum Lynne Station in Ridley Park.

“Very quick action from our herds that helped give this opportunity to be a safe result,” Busch said. “We don’t know where this started, just that it was in the area under the train and then obviously enveloped the train in flames.”

Passengers say that action was reported several minutes after leaving Philadelphia.

“I could smell a strange smoked, sulfur odor,” Cynthia Kayati remembered from Smyrna, Delaware. “I thought it was the train, normal things, but it got really strong, especially when we got to Crum Lynne.”

“I started to smell it too after a while. I think we got two stations down from here, and then people really started to notice it and started to get some panic,” Alvan Hurley from Newark added.

Some passengers say because of the smell, the train stopped, and the passengers were asked to move in the back before making the last stop.

Busch says septa is investigating and reviewing the steps taken.

Passengers are grateful workers acted quickly to get everyone out of harm.

“I think they are doing a fantastic job of making sure we are good,” Kayati said.

The service was stopped for several hours before it resumed just after 1 p.m. 23

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
