Here’s where the job is for January 2025 – In a chart

The health care system was once again a bright spot for the US economy in January, even when the overall job growth showed signs of slower.

Data on job growth in different areas of the economy of the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed healthcare and social assistance as the leading category and added 66,000 jobs. Retail and government were also strong and added more than 30,000 jobs per day.

The winnings of the health care system were largely in line with the growth rates from 2024.

There were some pockets of weakness where professional and business services lost 11,000 jobs. Employment in leisure and hospitality, one of the largest areas of job growth after the covid pandemic, also shrunk.

Overall, net growth of 143,000 was well below the upward revised growth of 307,000 in December. However, unemployment fell and wage growth was strong and pointed to a solid and a stable job market despite the lower heading number.

If you look at January, “What we see is a labor market that basically works for full employment. And then I think the real question in the future is: Can we maintain full employment?” University of Michigan Professor and former Department of Work Manager -Economics Betsey Stevenson said Friday at “Squawk Box.”
