Without Giannis Antetokounmpo Mister Bucks 115-110 to Hawks

game

Atlanta – Kyle Kuzma debuted with Milwaukee Bucks Friday night, when he came from the bench to score 12 points after being cleared to play almost an hour before Bucks lost 115-110 to Hawks in the State Farm Arena.

Atlanta improved to 23-29 overall. Hawks had lost nine of their earlier 10 on their way into the game. Bucks finished their week’s long road trip 1-2 and have lost six of their last eight games to fall to 27-23.

Kuzma was acquired on Thursday as part of a four-team agreement that sent Khris Middleton to Washington, Kuzma was with the team for shots, but the team was not sure that all trade details would be completed in time for the 29-year-old until to play. He and Big Man Jericho Sims actually got green light, and Kuzma helped the team something to offset the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo by scoring 12 points on 4-of-12-shooting in 24 minutes.

He was 4 for 9 for all 12 of his points in the first half and went 0 for 4 in the second half. Sims didn’t play.

Box score: Hawks 115, Bucks 110

The game contained some big races from both teams as Milwaukee fell behind with as many as a dozen late in the first quarter, led by as many as 21 early in the third and then had to try to get back from eight in the final minute.

Milwaukee withdrew within 106-105 on a Gary Trent Jr.-Three-Three Point with 3 minutes, 34 seconds left, but Atlanta responded with a 6-0 race to give himself some breathing room.

Bobby Portis Jr. Started instead of Antetokounmpo for the other straight game and scored 26 points and had 15 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. He also handed out six assists. Damian Lillard (23 points, 10 assists, 8 rebounds), Brook Lopez (16 points) and Trent (19) also reached double for Bucks.

Seven Atlanta players reached double in the scoring, led by Trae Young with 24 points on 9 of 22 shoots. Onyeka Okongwu scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds, while Dyson Daniels added 15 points and 10 assists to Hawks.

Giannis Antetokounmpo missed the other straight game with veal density

After starting Friday as questionable with density in his left calf, Antetokounmpo was excluded before the game. It’s the ninth game he’s missed this season and he can only miss eight more to stay eligible for all awards for the end of the season.

The MVP candidate went off the field just before the tip-off in Charlotte Wednesday with tightness in the muscle. He suffered a strain in the Soleus muscles in his calf at the end of last season, sidelining him to the whole of Bucks’ first round-playoff losses to Indiana.

BUCKS MAKES 11 THREE-POINTS IN SECOND QUARTER

Atlanta seemed to have completed the first quarter of a 22-5 race and took a 36-24 lead into the second quarter. But an official review decided that Bucks had a few seconds left, and out of Breakportis hit a floater to make it 36-26.

Hawks held their momentum early in the second quarter and took a 13-point lead of 41-29.

Then Bucks went off.

They made nine equally three-pointers in 30-6 races.

Trent (3), Portis (2), Prince, Lopez, Kuzma and Rollins made all triangles in the race.

Trent would do all four of its three-point attempts in the quarter when Bucks started 10 for 10 from deep before they were missing their first attempt. They ended 11 out of 15 behind the three-point line in the quarter on the way to score 47 points and take a 73-55 lead into half.

These were the most points that Bucks scored in another quarter this season.

Brook Lopez played big without Giannis Antetokounmpo

In the first quarter, Lopez tried to finesse a layup as he drove the pitch and he left the ball briefly on the front of the edge. His next chance, the 7-foot, 1-inch Bucks Center went strong for a can, but was greeted by Atlanta’s 6-10 Mouhamed Gueye, who rejected the attempt. When he went back the other way, Atlanta made a three-pointer. It was a sequence that was part of a 9-0 Atlanta race.

Lopez then went hard to the edge in the second quarter, being first called for an offensive error. But Doc Rivers challenged the call and it was turned-what led to a three-point game for Bucks’ Big Man.

In the third quarter, Lopez got a certain measure of revenge on the defensive end as he rejected an Onyeka Okongwu Dunk attempt on the edge.

Lopez finished with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting in 34 minutes. He also blocked two shots.
