After exposing twice because of the fires that destroyed LA last month, the Critics Choice Awards finally got started in LA Friday night.

Held in Santa Monica’s barker Hangar, only a few miles from the fire-raised Pacific Palisades neighborhood, this year’s ceremony occupied an unusual Friday night Castle. The red carpet was also an atypical affair with organizers earlier Advertising the cancellation of the usual TV-broadcast live show before awards.

Participants nevertheless appeared in style. Like last weekend’s Grammys, there were plenty of muted, dark -colored dresses and retained styling choices. Cynthia Erivo (in a shiny leather Armani Privé-Look) and Naomi Watts (in a structured Satin Prada dress) were among several participants who chose all-black appearance.

The men also entered the trend, just as Randall Park and Ewan McGregor wearing black T-shirts under dark formal jackets.

But the guests also brought pops of color and spark. Lupita Nyong’o’s Custom Chanel dress contained a light flower bustier visible through otherwise gloomy black tulle. Elsewhere, both Zoe Saldaña and “Shōgun” starred Moeka Hoska Hoshi stunned in elegant red dresses, while Angelina Jolie and Ariana Grande impressed in naked dresses by Elie Saab and Dior respectively.
