Ex chief minister, his deputy among AAP -tung weights who lost Delhi votes

When BJP scored a massive victory in Delhi, which improved its connection with nearly 40 seats, five key leaders suffered from the ruling AAM AADMI party (AAP) a crushing defeat. These include AAP’s national collectors Arvind Kejriwal, the party’s number 2 Manish Sisodia and the prominent minister of Saurabh Bharadwaj.

Here are Aap’s most important leaders who lost

ARVIND KEJRIWAL: The national collector of AAP, Mr Kejriwal entered politics with a message of change after the anti-corruption movement against the UPA government. First sworn as chief minister for a short duration in 2013, he led AAP to thumping victories in the 2015 elections and 2020. He was arrested last year in a corruption case linked to Delhi’s now scrapped spirits policy. When he was awarded bail, Mr. Kejriwal ended as chief minister and said he would return to the position only after “People’s Court” handed down a verdict in favor of him. He lost against BJP’s Parvesh Verma in New Delhi.

Manish Sisodia: Delhi’s former Deputy Chief Minister and Number 2 leader in AAP, Mr. Sisodia has lost to BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah in Jangpura. A three-time MLA from East Delhi’s Patparganj, he had switched to Jangpura for this election. Mr. Sisodia was arrested in a corruption case associated with spirits in 2023 and spent almost one and a half years in prison before receiving bail. Like Mr Kejriwal, he had also refused to take a seat in the government before “people’s judgment”.

Saurabh Bharadwaj: A prominent AAP leader, Mr. Bhardwaj, won the bigger Kailash seat three times in 2013, but lost to BJPS Shikha Roy this time. A minister in the Delhi government handled several portfolios including home, power and water supply. His seat was seen as a safe seat for AAP, but BJP managed to turn tables.

Durgesh Pathak: A member of AAP’s supreme bodies, the political affairs and the national director Mr. Pathak lost against BJP’s Umang Bajaj in Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar seat. Mr. Pathak won the seat in 2022 in an election. He was reputed this time but lost.

AVADH OJHA: IAS-Coach-Faced politician, popular for his videos on social media, Mr. Ojha joined AAP prior to the election and was named the party’s candidate from East Delhi’s Patparganj. The Patparganj seat was won by Mr. Sisodia three times in a row. This time Mr. Sisodia switched to Jangpura. Mr. Ojha lost against BJP’s Ravinder Singh Negi by a margin of over 28,000 votes.
