New York City, Boston among over 90 million under threat of winter storm this weekend

Winter Weather Alerts extend over 1,700 miles across the northern United States as heavy snow and areas of ice threaten weekend trips.

New York – A new winter storm carries down a wide cut of northern American Saturday and threatens over 90 million people with heavy snow and/or freezing rain.

A number of winter storm warnings and advisers paint the weather map over the top Midwest into Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, covering larger metro areas such as Minneapolis, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington and Boston.

Snow had already begun on Saturday and continues to rise over the top middle West and Great Lakes. Temperatures are expected to be in teens and 20s as the heavy snow falls, leading to very light, powdered snow that is prone to blow and drive.

The combination of the cold air and moisture can mean some sites such as Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Detroit could experience their largest blizzard in winter so far with storm accumulations reaching 4-8 inches.

The outer periphery of the storm system reaches the northeast Saturday night and produces another round with snow, gossip and freezing rain.

Fox Forecast Center said that like the first storm, Pennsylvania and western Maryland appear to be in the bull’s eye once again too much influential ice.

“Where ice is heaviest, power outages and minor wood damage are possible,” said prognosis with Noaa’s weather foremost center.

Across New England, heavy snow falls through the first half of Sunday as a coastal low develops and traces south of Long Island. Snowfall speeds could sometimes reach 1-2 inches per hour.

There is a high probability of more than 4 inches of snow in and around the NYC Metro area late Saturday night and 6 plus inches for areas generally north and northeast of New York City.

Snow Total forecasts are approaching a foot around the Boston area and parts of Upstate New York-Much of it falls overnight Saturday night into the before dawn on Sunday morning.

South of Interstate 70, rain is probably over Ohio Valley and Central Appalachians. Potentially heavy quantities will be most worrying in the central Appalachians, where soil is expected that is already wet and ample rain in the short term, says Fox Forecast Center.

However, there is no rest for the tired ones. Prognosis models suggest that a whole four winter storms will sweep more over the United States throughout the week into next weekend.
